Northeast Community Credit Union Produces Protect Yourself Seminar Series for Women FIRST IN SERIES, “SELF DEFENSE”, A BIG HIT! HAVERHILL, MA --- Last Tuesday evening, cries of “NO! Get Back!!” resonated through Northeast Community Credit Union as members of the credit union practiced hands on self defense techniques. The Self Defense Seminar was the first of a three-part seminar series titled “Protect Yourself”. The seminars are geared specifically toward women and run through the month of October. Led by Haverhill Police Officer Doreen Champagne, the self defense seminar focused on being aware of one’s surrounding, presenting a confident image and practical self-defense techniques women can use if placed in a defensive situation. Officer Champagne covered preventative measures one can take in protecting themselves at home as well as when in a threatening situation.
“The first rule of self defense is prevention”, stated Officer Champagne. “Being aware of your surroundings, your location, your physical limitations, all of those things can help you to avoid an attack. Prevention is the key to self defense, and will often thwart an attack before it even starts.” “We’ve always taken our responsibility to the community seriously and we continuously look for ways in which we can provide information that helps our members,” said Peter DiBenedetto, Treasurer/CEO. “We’ve offered a women’s Financial Planning seminar in the past, and this year decided to create a triumvirate that focused on many of the different ways in which women need to protect themselves. This is the first of this type of series in the area and we were pleased to partner with the Haverhill Police Department and the FBI to produce the seminars.” Other seminars include Financial Planning: Planning for the Unexpected, and Protecting Yourself Online. The financial planning seminar will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 2, and the Online and Identity Theft seminar will be held on Tuesday, October 16. All seminars begin at 6:00 p.m. and are held at the credit union’s Cushing Avenue location.
